Mr. Manager, I am interested in receiving regular and up-to-date NEWS from Liberia. I have developed a personal web site and I would like to add Liberian and other African news on my site for further dissemination. Thanks very much. J.S.
Independent Star Radio, which like Taylor's own Liberia Communications Network, were the only stations which remained open and broadcast news throughout the crisis, quoted Taylor on Saturday as giving orders for anyone caught looting to be shot on sight. Three other radio stations in Monrovia went off the air. IRIN, Special Liberia, Sept. 21, 1998.
Just to say - well done on coverage over the weekend.... We have posted all your reports on the private section of AlertNet for our members. Thanks and bonne continuation! S.A.
Star Radio is to be commended for their solid, factual, comprehensive coverage of the civil disturbance over the weekend. Star journalists stayed on the air and moved around the city gathering as much information as the situation permitted. Star instituted an hourly update that Monrovians across the city turned to for their information as the crisis evolved. In addition, Star carried President Taylor's speech live on Saturday and have consistently carried all of the government of Liberia's releases. Throughout the crisis, Star broadcast only stories that they could verify. They did not engage in any speculation on the crisis and proved to be the station that Monrovians consistently turned to for information. Star continues to actively follow the situation seeking information from all parties involved in the conflict. The government of Liberia has also lauded Star's coverage recognizing how their factual coverage in English and vernacular languages contained the level of panic in the city, country, and abroad. Star was the source of all the first international news stories on the situation and instituted a series of special e-mail updates on the situation. Once again, Star has played a pivotal role in assuaging Liberians' fear and controlling the spread of rumors in the country. Bravo! Star Radio! T.L.
On a personal note, I found Star's coverage to be the most reliable source of information, far exceeding information that could be provided by the radio nets of various NGOs and UN. T.L
Thank you for the good job. I wake up each morning and read the latest news from Liberia, as if I am listening to a BBC Report. I am proud of the work you are doing. Your contribution to national development by transmitting development communiation is a valuable asset in nation-build. You have braved all odds to keep the news line for Liberians at home and abroadopen. Never before in the history of Liberia has such a noble feat been achieved. You are a shining example of a valuable tool that is needed in the redevelopment of Liberia. Even during the glory days of the DAILY OBSERVE wherein newspapers were sent abroad for sale, Liberia did not receive world attention as much as what you have created. Keep the good work and may God bless your hands. Extend my sincere thanks and appreciation to my colleagues. J.S.K (USA)
Dear friends, I work in Liberia as stringer for the Voice of America and Reuters, but presently vacationing in the United States. Anxious to keep an eye on events back in Liberia, I would like to access your Star Radio news bulletin from Monrovia via e-mail or whatever. J.K.

An independent radio station, Radio Agatashya (envisaged from as early as may) was set up by the Swiss branch of Reporters sans frontières. Supported by and working closely with UNHCR and the ICRC, it began to broadcast counter-propaganda, mainly in Kinyarwanda, as well as practical information about hygene and food distribution.
Rwanda: Death, Despair and Defiance, p. 655 African Rights, London, september 1994.
Rwandan refugees, as most African refugees, are avid radio listeners. UNHCR (...) has begun to collaborate with Radio Agatashya, an independent station, to provide information to refugees. Rwandan government radio is also available. These and any other available radio broadcasts should provide more intensive information to refugees about conditions in Rwanda (...) in an effort to erode gradually the powerful negative propaganda assaulting refugees in the camps.
Rwandan Refugees: Updated Findings and Recommendations, U.S. Committee for Refugees, Washington, October 25, 1995.
We selected Fondation Hirondelle because we believe they are a neutral party, they are a party that could be relied upon. I belive that its employees are professionals, I trust that they believe in neutrality.
Romani Urasa, UNHCR Representative, Kigali, 25 octobre 1995
We certainly support your staff and project in the Great Lake Region. Our admiration for your brave work in the area is extensive.
R. Jones, coordinator International Pen, a World Association of writers, London, January 20, 1996
