South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir, has accused officials of stealing at least $4 billion USD while entrusted with government resources.
President Kiir has sent 75 letters to current and former government officials urging them to recover the funds they had embezzled.
« The people of South Sudan and the international community are alarmed by the level of corruption in South Sudan, « the letter read.
« In a number of speeches I gave… I made clear that corruption has no place in my government. » President Kiir said in the letter.
« Many people in South Sudan are suffering and yet some government officials simply care about themselves. » The President emphaized in his letter to the 75 officials.
President Kiir pledged amnesty to officials who refund the stolen money.
« If funds are returned the government of South Sudan will grant amnesty and will keep it confidential. » Kiir promised the 75 in his letter.
