In this study, Dr. Emma Heywood and Dr. Beatrice Ivey of the University of Sheffield discuss the importance of "loud" participation (formalized spaces) and "quiet" participation (informal discussion spaces) for community radio. Community radio stations rarely "hear" listener participation through these informal discussion spaces that are more closely associated with women.
